L-Threonine (C4H9NO3) is a white crystalline powder that dissolves in water. Animals and humans cannot make it themselves, so it must come from the diet. Commercial L-threonine is produced by bacterial fermentation and then crystallized.
In pig and poultry diets, threonine is typically one of the first limiting amino acids after lysine and methionine. Feed producers therefore add it to compound feed so they can lower crude protein levels while keeping performance, which also reduces nitrogen excretion. It often appears in premixes with DL-Methionine and L-Tryptophan.
