Nickel(II) Chloride Hexahydrate (CAS 7791-20-0), min. 98%, supplied wholesale by Zyntex for professional use. Chloride component for Watts nickel plating and Wood’s nickel strike, and raw material for nickel catalysts. CoA and SDS.
Nickel(II) chloride hexahydrate (NiCl2·6H2O) forms green, deliquescent crystals that dissolve very easily in water and ethanol.
In addition, electroplaters use it as the chloride source in Watts nickel baths, which build on Nickel Sulfate, nickel chloride and Boric Acid. The chloride improves anode dissolution and bath conductivity. In high-chloride Wood’s nickel strike baths, it allows plating onto stainless steel. It also appears in Nickel sulfamate baths in small amounts.
Notably, in chemistry, nickel chloride serves as a raw material for nickel catalysts and other nickel compounds. Nickel compounds count as carcinogenic, mutagenic and toxic for reproduction in the EU, so nickel chloride is available only for professional industrial use.
Typical uses include, for example:
⚡ Watts Nickel Plating
Chloride component in decorative as well as engineering nickel baths.
🔩 Nickel Strike
Main component of Wood’s nickel strike for stainless steel.
🧪 Catalysts
Raw material for nickel catalysts.
🏭 Nickel Compounds
Starting material for other nickel salts.

Always consult the Safety Data Sheet (SDS), because it contains the full classification and handling instructions.
What is the role of nickel chloride in a Watts bath?
It supplies chloride ions, which keep nickel anodes dissolving evenly and increase bath conductivity, while nickel sulfate provides most of the nickel.
