Phosphorus Trichloride Product Overview
Phosphorus trichloride (PCl3) is a colorless to slightly yellow, fuming liquid that boils at about 76°C. It reacts violently with water, forming Phosphorous Acid and hydrogen chloride.
The chemical industry uses it to make phosphorous acid and phosphonates, the herbicide glyphosate, phosphite antioxidants and stabilizers for plastics, organophosphorus flame retardants, and Phosphorus Oxychloride and phosphorus pentachloride. In organic synthesis, it converts carboxylic acids to acid chlorides and alcohols to alkyl chlorides.
