Vitamin K Product Overview
Vitamin K is a group of compounds with a common naphthoquinone core. Vitamin K1 (phytonadione, phylloquinone) is a yellow, viscous oil that occurs naturally in green plants, whereas vitamin K3 (menadione) is a synthetic compound, usually supplied as water-soluble salts such as menadione sodium bisulfite (MSB) or menadione nicotinamide bisulfite (MNB).
In addition, pharmaceutical companies use vitamin K1 in injections, oral drops and tablets, including the injections given to newborns. Similarly, producers of nutritional products use K1 and vitamin K2 forms in tablets and capsules, under the regulations of each market. Feed producers also use vitamin K3 salts as a cost-effective vitamin K source in premixes for poultry and pigs; menadione is not permitted in human nutritional products in many markets.
