Vitamin A Product Overview
Retinol (C20H30O) is very sensitive to light, oxygen and heat, so commercial vitamin A is almost always supplied as the more stable esters: retinyl acetate (CAS 127-47-9) and retinyl palmitate (CAS 79-81-2). These are available as oils, crystalline powders and stabilized beadlets, and their strength remains expressed in international units (IU) per gram.
In addition, the largest use is in animal feed, where it is an essential component of premixes for all livestock species. Food producers also use it to fortify margarine, milk, flour and other staple foods, and producers of nutritional products and pharmaceutical companies use it in tablets, capsules and drops. Similarly, cosmetic formulators use retinol and retinyl palmitate in skin care.
