Beta-Carotene Product Overview
Beta-carotene (C40H56) is a deep red to violet-red crystalline powder that is insoluble in water and very sensitive to light, oxygen and heat. Producers make it by chemical synthesis or by fermentation and extraction from natural sources such as the fungus Blakeslea trispora or the alga Dunaliella salina.
Because pure crystals degrade easily, food producers mostly use stabilized forms: 30% oil suspensions for fat-based products and 1–10% cold-water-dispersible (CWD) powders for beverages, dairy and confectionery. In the EU, it remains approved as the food colorant E160a. Similarly, producers of nutritional products use it as a provitamin A source, feed producers use it in pet food and livestock diets, and cosmetic formulators use it in skin care and self-tanning products.
