Canthaxanthin Product Overview
Canthaxanthin (C40H52O2) is a red-violet carotenoid that occurs naturally in some mushrooms, algae and crustaceans. The pure grade is sensitive to light and oxygen, so it comes as 10% formulations: stabilized feed-grade beadlets and cold-water-soluble (CWS) powders for food.
In addition, feed producers use it in laying hen diets to give egg yolks a deep orange color, often combined with yellow xanthophylls, and in broiler diets for skin color. In aquaculture, it has been used for flesh color in some species. Feed use remains regulated, and in the EU maximum levels apply. In food, it remains approved in some markets for specific uses, such as certain sausages, under E number E161g.
