Sulfanilamide Product Overview
Sulfanilamide (C6H8N2O2S) is a white to yellowish-white crystalline powder that is slightly soluble in cold water and more soluble in hot water. It was the active metabolite of Prontosil, the first commercial sulfonamide drug in the 1930s.
Today, pharmaceutical and veterinary producers use it in topical powders and some veterinary formulations. Chemists use it as a starting material for other sulfonamides such as Sulfadiazine, Sulfadimidine and Sulfaguanidine, and for other sulfonyl compounds.
In analytical chemistry, it is a key component of the Griess reagent, used together with N-(1-naphthyl)ethylenediamine to determine nitrite in water, food and soil samples. Zyntex supplies pharmaceutical and reagent grades.
