Description
Star Anise (Illicium verum) is the dried star-shaped fruit used as a spice, as the source of anethole and as a raw material for shikimic acid. Zyntex is a wholesale supplier and distributor of the whole dried fruit for food, flavor and chemical customers, with a CoA for every lot.

Star Anise Product Overview

It is the fruit of Illicium verum, an evergreen tree grown mainly in southern China and Vietnam. The dried fruits have eight boat-shaped segments, each holding a glossy seed, and a sweet, licorice-like aroma. Their essential oil consists mainly of trans-anethole (CAS 4180-23-8).

Food producers use it as a whole or ground spice in Asian cuisine, spice blends, bakery and beverages, and distillers use it in anise-flavored spirits and liqueurs. Essential oil producers distill it to obtain its essential oil and natural anethole. The fruits are also a commercial source of shikimic acid, a starting material for some pharmaceutical syntheses.

An important quality point is authenticity: the Japanese species (Illicium anisatum) looks similar but is toxic, so lots must be checked by appearance and analytical methods. Other spice ingredients in our range include Cassia Extract, Cardamom Extract and Ginger Extract.
