Description
Propylene Product Overview
Propylene (C3H6) is a colorless, highly flammable gas with a faint petroleum odor. It boils at about −48°C, so suppliers store and ship it as a liquefied gas under pressure. Producers obtain it mainly from steam cracking and refinery processes, and the market distinguishes polymer grade (typically ≥99.5%) from chemical and refinery grades.
Most of it goes into polypropylene plastics. The chemical industry also converts it into the epoxide PO, which in turn yields 1,2-Propylene glycol and polyether polyols, and into acrylonitrile, acrylic acid and cumene. The cumene route produces phenol and Acetone, while hydroformylation (the oxo process) gives butyraldehydes and alcohols such as 1-Butanol.
