1-Butanol Product Overview
1-Butanol (C4H10O) is a clear, colorless liquid with a characteristic alcoholic odor. It boils at about 118°C, is partly soluble in water (about 7–8% at 20°C) and mixes with most organic solvents. Producers make it mainly by the oxo process from Propylene, and bio-based butanol from fermentation is also available.
The chemical industry converts most n-butanol into butyl acrylate and methacrylate for paints and adhesives, butyl acetate for coatings, butyl glycol ethers and dibutyl phthalate-type plasticizers. As a solvent, it is used in lacquers, resins, inks and for extracting antibiotics, vitamins and natural products. It is often used together with faster solvents such as Methyl Ethyl Ketone and Acetone.
