Ethylene Product Overview
Ethylene (C2H4) is a colorless, highly flammable gas with a faint sweet odor. It boils at about −104°C and is supplied in pressurized cylinders or, in bulk, through pipelines and cryogenic transport. Producers make it mainly by steam cracking of ethane and naphtha.
The chemical industry converts most of it into polyethylene. Oxidation gives the epoxide EO, which yields glycols such as Diethylene Glycol DEG and surfactants. Chlorination leads to EDC for PVC, alkylation of benzene gives ethylbenzene for styrene, and hydration gives Ethanol.
Plants produce this gas naturally to trigger ripening. For this reason, fruit distributors use small, controlled amounts of the gas in ripening rooms for bananas, avocados, mangoes and tomatoes. Note that it is a different product from Ethylene Carbonate, a solid battery electrolyte component that Zyntex also supplies.
