Methanol Product Overview
Methanol (CH3OH) is a clear, colorless, volatile liquid with a mild alcohol odor. It boils at about 65°C and mixes completely with water and most organic solvents. It is highly flammable and, importantly, highly toxic to humans: even small amounts can cause blindness or death if swallowed.
The chemical industry converts most methanol into formaldehyde, which goes into resins for wood panels, and into acetic acid and other intermediates. Biodiesel producers react it with vegetable oils and fats to make fatty acid methyl esters. It also serves as a solvent for inks, resins and extraction, and as a carbon source in wastewater denitrification.
