Benzotriazole Product Overview
Benzotriazole (C6H5N3) is a white to light tan crystalline solid that melts at about 98–100°C. It dissolves moderately in water and well in alcohols and many organic solvents.
On copper, brass and bronze surfaces, BTA forms a very thin, insoluble protective film that blocks corrosion even at low concentrations. For this reason, it is used in closed cooling water systems, engine coolants and antifreeze, aircraft de-icing fluids and metalworking fluids. Dishwasher detergent producers add it to protect silverware from tarnishing, and it is also used to protect copper in electronics and on printed circuit boards.
Other applications include antifogging agents in photography and use as an intermediate in organic synthesis. In water treatment formulas, it often works alongside sequestering agents such as Sodium Tripolyphosphate or EDTA, and in coolants alongside glycols such as Diethylene Glycol DEG.
