Benzalkonium Chloride Product Overview
Benzalkonium chloride is a mixture of alkylbenzyldimethylammonium chlorides with mainly C12 and C14 alkyl chains. Commercial solutions are clear, colorless to pale yellow liquids that foam when shaken. As a cationic surfactant, it adsorbs onto negatively charged surfaces such as microbial cell membranes, which explains its antimicrobial activity.
Pharmaceutical companies use it as a preservative in eye drops, nasal sprays and other aqueous products. Cosmetic formulators use it at low levels as a preservative and in hair conditioners, within the limits of the EU Cosmetics Regulation. In industry and institutions, it is a common active substance in surface disinfectants, cleaners and water treatment products, where product authorization rules under biocide legislation apply.
Because it is cationic, it is incompatible with anionic surfactants such as Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulfate and with soaps. Formulators often combine it with chelating agents such as Disodium Edta to boost performance, or consider Chlorhexidine for other antimicrobial applications.
