Barium Metaborate Product Overview
Barium metaborate (BaB2O4) is a white powder that dissolves only slightly in water but readily in dilute mineral acids. Commercial pigment grades are often surface-treated, for example with silica, to control their solubility in coating systems.
Paint producers use it as a functional pigment. In primers and anticorrosive coatings, it slowly releases borate ions that passivate steel surfaces. It also protects paints against mold and mildew and contributes to flame retardancy, often in combination with Zinc borate and Aluminum Hydroxide. Plastics, rubber, paper and adhesives benefit from the same properties.
