Ammonium Nitrate Product Overview
Ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3) is a white crystalline or granular solid that is very soluble in water and contains about 34–35% nitrogen. It is a strong oxidizer and is classified for transport as a dangerous good (Class 5.1).
Its main use is as a nitrogen fertilizer, often as calcium ammonium nitrate or in blends with Urea and Ammonium Sulfate. Licensed explosives producers use technical-grade ammonium nitrate for commercial blasting agents in mining and quarrying. Other uses include instant cold packs and the production of nitrous oxide.
In the EU, it with more than 16% nitrogen is a restricted explosives precursor under Regulation (EU) 2019/1148 and may not be made available to the general public; high-nitrogen fertilizer grades must also pass detonation resistance tests. Similar rules apply in many other countries.
