Ammonium Sulfate Product Overview
Ammonium sulfate ((NH4)2SO4) is a white crystalline powder or granule that is very soluble in water. It contains about 21% nitrogen and 24% sulfur. It is approved as a food additive under E number E517.
In agriculture, it is used as a fertilizer for crops that need both nitrogen and sulfur, such as oilseed rape and cereals, and to lower the pH of alkaline soils. It is often blended with Urea to add sulfur to high-nitrogen fertilizers. It also improves the performance of some herbicide sprays by conditioning hard water.
In laboratories, it is the classic salt for precipitating and purifying proteins (salting out). In industry, it is used as a dough conditioner in baking, as a flame retardant for wood and cellulose products, and in water treatment for chloramine formation.
