Aluminum Sulfate Product Overview
Aluminum sulfate (Al2(SO4)3), often called alum or papermaker’s alum, usually comes as white to off-white granules, flakes or powder of the hydrated salt with about 16–17% Al2O3, as well as in liquid form. It also dissolves easily in water and gives an acidic solution.
In addition, water treatment plants use it as a cost-effective coagulant for drinking water and wastewater, where it forms aluminium hydroxide flocs that trap particles. Compared with pre-polymerized coagulants such as Poly Aluminium Chloride, it consumes more alkalinity, whereas it remains cheaper. Similarly, paper mills use it with rosin size for water resistance and to control pH, and textile and leather producers use it as a mordant.
