Valganciclovir hydrochloride is a white to off-white crystalline powder that is soluble in water. It is the L-valyl ester of ganciclovir; the ester greatly improves oral absorption, after which the body converts it back to active ganciclovir. It exists as a mixture of two diastereomers, whose ratio is controlled.
