Lactulose Product Overview
Lactulose (C12H22O11) is a sugar made of galactose and fructose. Producers obtain it by isomerizing lactose from milk under alkaline conditions. It is available as a white crystalline powder and as a viscous, clear syrup concentrate, which usually also contains small amounts of galactose and lactose.
The human body cannot digest lactulose in the small intestine, so it reaches the colon unchanged. Pharmaceutical companies use it in oral solutions and powders as an osmotic laxative and in medicines for hepatic encephalopathy; in veterinary medicine, it is used for similar purposes in pets. In some markets, food producers also use it as a prebiotic ingredient within regulatory limits.
