Lactic Acid Product Overview
Lactic acid (C3H6O3) usually comes as a clear, colorless to slightly yellow aqueous solution of 80–90%. The commercial grade comes from fermentation of sugars, which gives mainly the natural L(+) form (CAS 79-33-4).
Food producers use it as an acidulant and preservative (E270) in confectionery, beverages, dairy products, sauces and meat processing, because it gives a mild, clean acidity. Similarly, pharmaceutical companies use it and its salts, such as Calcium lactate, in infusion solutions and formulations, while cosmetic formulators use it as a gentle alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) for exfoliation and pH adjustment.
