Sodium Bicarbonate Product Overview
Sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) is a white crystalline powder that dissolves in water to give a mildly alkaline solution. When it meets an acid or is heated, it releases carbon dioxide. This simple reaction explains most of its uses. In food, it carries the E number E500(ii).
Bakers combine it with acids such as Tartaric Acid or Citric Acid Anhydrous in baking powders, where the released gas makes dough rise. Pharmaceutical companies use the same reaction in effervescent tablets and antacid formulations. In dairy cattle feed, it buffers the rumen, especially in high-energy diets.
In industry, plants inject it into flue gases to remove sulfur dioxide and hydrogen chloride. It is also the active agent in BC dry chemical fire extinguishers and a gentle blasting medium for cleaning surfaces. For sodium-free applications, Potassium Hydrogen Carbonate is the usual alternative.
