Climbazole Product Overview
Climbazole (C15H17ClN2O2) is a white to pale grayish-white crystalline powder. It does not dissolve in water but dissolves well in ethanol, glycols and surfactant concentrates, so formulators usually pre-dissolve it before adding it to a shampoo base.
Its main role is to control Malassezia yeasts on the scalp, which are associated with dandruff. Shampoo producers therefore use it in anti-dandruff shampoos, scalp lotions and conditioners, often together with Piroctone Olamine. After the EU ban on zinc pyrithione in cosmetics, these two have become the leading anti-dandruff actives in the EU market.
In the EU, it is permitted as a preservative and as an anti-dandruff agent in rinse-off shampoos within specified maximum concentrations. It is also used in soaps and deodorants. For other azole compounds, see Miconazole Nitrate.
