Pharmaceutical-grade Benzethonium Chloride (CAS 121-54-0), 97–103%, supplied wholesale by Zyntex. Quaternary ammonium antiseptic for first-aid products, alcohol-free hand sanitizers, cosmetic preservation and disinfectants. CoA and SDS.
Benzethonium chloride (C27H42ClNO2) is a white crystalline powder that dissolves easily in water and alcohol, forming foaming solutions. As a cationic surfactant, it disrupts the cell membranes of bacteria, fungi and some viruses.
In addition, pharmaceutical and personal care producers use it in first-aid antiseptic sprays and wipes, in alcohol-free hand sanitizers, and as a preservative in cosmetics and some eye and ear products. Similarly, disinfectant producers use it in surface disinfectants. Maximum concentrations depend on the product type and the market, for example under the EU Cosmetics Regulation.
Furthermore, related quaternary ammonium and antiseptic ingredients in our range include Benzalkonium chloride solution, Chlorhexidine and 2,4-Dichlorobenzyl alcohol.
Typical uses include, for example:
🩹 First-Aid Products
Antiseptic in sprays as well as wipes.
🧴 Hand Sanitizers

How does benzethonium chloride compare with benzalkonium chloride?
Both are quaternary ammonium antiseptics; benzethonium chloride is a single compound, whereas benzalkonium chloride is a mixture of homologues.
Is it suitable for alcohol-free hand sanitizers?
Yes. It is a common active in alcohol-free hand sanitizers in some markets, within the permitted concentrations.
