Tyrothricin Product Overview
Tyrothricin is a mixture of cyclic and linear polypeptides produced by fermentation with Brevibacillus brevis. It consists mainly of tyrocidines and gramicidins and is a white to cream powder that is practically insoluble in water. Discovered in 1939, it was one of the first commercially produced antibiotics.
Because it is too toxic for systemic use, it is used only topically. Pharmaceutical companies use it in throat lozenges, often combined with local anesthetics such as Benzocaine, and in gels and powders for minor skin wounds.
