Selenium Product Overview
Elemental selenium (Se) occurs in several forms. The stable gray form is a metallic-looking semiconductor whose electrical conductivity rises when exposed to light, while the red amorphous form appears on precipitation. Commercial selenium is recovered mainly as a by-product of copper refining.
Glass producers use selenium to neutralize the green tint caused by iron and, at higher levels, to make bronze and red glasses. Metallurgists add it to steels and copper alloys to improve machinability. In electronics and energy, it is a key element of CIGS thin-film solar cells and of compound semiconductors such as Zinc selenide, Tin selenide and Bismuth selenide.
