Phosphatidylserine Product Overview
Phosphatidylserine is a natural phospholipid found in cell membranes, especially in the brain. Commercial PS is produced from soy or sunflower lecithin by an enzymatic process called transphosphatidylation, in which the enzyme phospholipase D attaches the amino acid serine. The product is a white to light yellow powder.
Commercial grades are standardized to defined PS contents, typically 20%, 50% or 70%; the rest consists of other phospholipids and carriers. Producers of nutritional products use it in capsules, tablets and powders, under the regulations of each market. Soy-derived and sunflower-derived grades are available, which matters for allergen and non-GMO requirements.
