Dimelamine Phosphate Product Overview
Dimelamine phosphate is a salt of two melamine molecules with one molecule of phosphoric acid. It is a white, fine powder with low water solubility. Compared with Melamine phosphate, which has a 1:1 ratio, it contains more nitrogen and less phosphorus, with a theoretical phosphorus content of about 8.8%.
When heated, it releases phosphoric acid and non-flammable gases. This promotes the formation of an insulating char layer, which is the basis of intumescent flame-retardant systems. It is used in intumescent coatings, textile back-coatings, flexible polyurethane foams and polyolefin compounds, often in combination with other additives.
It belongs to the family of melamine-based flame retardants together with Melamine cyanurate and Melamine borate. These halogen-free systems are increasingly preferred over brominated flame retardants in construction, transportation and electrical applications.
