Melamine Cyanurate Product Overview
Melamine cyanurate is a salt-like complex of melamine and cyanuric acid, held together by a dense network of hydrogen bonds. It is a white, fine crystalline powder that is practically insoluble in water and most solvents and remains stable up to about 320–350°C.
When exposed to fire, melamine cyanurate decomposes endothermically. This absorbs heat, releases non-flammable nitrogen-containing gases and causes the polymer to drip away from the flame, which helps parts pass flammability tests such as UL 94 V-0. It is especially effective in unreinforced polyamide 6 and polyamide 66, and is also used in thermoplastic polyurethanes, epoxies and coatings.
It belongs to the melamine-based flame retardant family together with Dimelamine phosphate, Melamine phosphate and Melamine borate. In some formulations it is combined with mineral flame retardants such as Aluminum Hydroxide.
