Di-tert-butyl Dicarbonate Product Overview
Di-tert-butyl dicarbonate (C10H18O5) is a colorless solid or liquid that melts at about 22–24°C, so it may appear in either state. It also reacts with amines under mild conditions, releasing carbon dioxide and tert-butanol, and hydrolyzes slowly in moist air.
Chemists use it to attach the Boc protecting group to amines, which keeps them unreactive during later synthesis steps; mild acids remove the group again. This makes it one of the most widely used reagents in API, peptide and fine chemical synthesis. Similarly, it serves to make carbamates and as an activating agent.
