Copper(II) Nitrate (CAS 3251-23-8), min. 98.0%, supplied wholesale by Zyntex. Soluble copper source for supported catalysts, patinas, ceramic colorants, nitration reactions and textile mordanting. CoA and SDS with every lot.
Copper(II) nitrate (Cu(NO3)2) is a blue crystalline solid, commercially usually supplied as the trihydrate, which dissolves very easily in water and ethanol. On heating, it decomposes to copper oxide, which makes it a convenient precursor.
In addition, catalyst producers use it to deposit copper on supports for hydrogenation, methanol and dehydrogenation catalysts. Ceramic producers also use it as a colorant, and artists and metal finishers apply its solutions to create green-blue patinas on copper, brass and bronze. In organic chemistry, it serves as a nitrating agent for aromatic compounds.
Furthermore, other uses include textile mordanting, wood preservation and pyrotechnics. For other copper salts, see Copper(II) Nitrate, Copper Sulfate, Copper(II) chloride 2-hydrate and Copper(II) acetate 1-hydrate.
Typical uses include, for example:
⚗️ Catalysts
Copper source for supported catalysts.
🎨 Patina and Ceramics
Patina solutions for copper alloys as well as ceramic colorant.
🧪 Synthesis
Nitrating agent as well as copper reagent.
👕 Textiles
Mordant in dyeing.

⚠️ Safety & Handling: Oxidizer that may intensify fire; harmful if swallowed; causes skin irritation and serious eye damage; very toxic to aquatic life. Keep away from combustible materials, wear gloves and goggles, and prevent release to drains. Store in tightly closed containers in a cool, dry place, so that the material stays in good condition. Always consult the Safety Data Sheet (SDS), because it contains the full classification and handling instructions.
Do you supply the trihydrate?
Yes. The trihydrate is the common commercial form and also appears as a separate product. Please state the form when requesting a quote.
How is copper nitrate used for patinas?
Diluted solutions are applied to heated copper, brass or bronze surfaces, where they form blue-green copper compounds.
How can I get a price and documents?
Prices depend on quantity, packaging and destination, so please contact us with your required volume. We then send a quotation together with the CoA and SDS.
