Chlorphenesin Product Overview
Chlorphenesin (C9H11ClO3) is a white crystalline powder that is slightly soluble in water and dissolves in glycols and ethanol. It is effective against bacteria, yeasts and molds.
In addition, cosmetic formulators use it at up to 0.3%, the maximum allowed in the EU, often combined with phenoxyethanol, 1,2-Hexanediol or 1,3-Butylene Glycol to build broad-spectrum preservative systems for creams, lotions, shampoos, sunscreens and makeup. Because it dissolves poorly in water, it is usually pre-dissolved in glycols.
