1,2-Hexanediol (C6H14O2) is a clear, colorless, almost odorless liquid that mixes with water and alcohols. Its amphiphilic structure gives it antimicrobial properties, which allow formulators to reduce conventional preservatives.
In addition, cosmetic formulators use it at about 0.5–2% in toners, serums, creams, makeup removers, wet wipes and baby care products, often combined with 4-Hydroxyacetophenone or caprylyl glycol in preservative-free or reduced-preservative systems. It also acts as a humectant and solvent for active ingredients.
