Cerium(III) Chloride Heptahydrate (CAS 18618-55-8), 99.0–99.9%, supplied wholesale by Zyntex. Reagent for Luche reductions and organocerium chemistry, and starting material for cerium catalysts and compounds. CoA and SDS.
Cerium(III) chloride heptahydrate (CeCl3·7H2O) is a white crystalline solid that dissolves easily in water and ethanol. It absorbs moisture from the air, so it is stored in tightly closed containers.
Organic chemists know it best from the Luche reduction: together with sodium borohydride or Potassium Borohydride, it selectively reduces α,β-unsaturated ketones to allylic alcohols. After careful drying to the anhydrous form, it is used to prepare organocerium reagents, which add cleanly to ketones that are prone to side reactions.
Industry uses cerium chloride as a starting material for cerium catalysts, Cerium Oxide and other cerium compounds, and in corrosion-inhibiting treatments for metals. For other cerium salts, see Cerium Nitrate Hexahydrate and Cerium(III) fluoride.
Main application areas:
🧪 Luche Reduction
Selective reduction of enones with borohydrides.
⚗️ Organocerium Reagents
Precursor for organocerium chemistry after drying.
🏭 Catalysts
Starting material for cerium-based catalysts.
🔩 Corrosion Inhibition
Component of rare earth metal treatments.

⚠️ Safety & Handling: Causes skin and serious eye irritation and may irritate the respiratory tract. Avoid dust formation and wear gloves, eye protection and dust protection. Store in tightly closed containers in a dry place, as the product is hygroscopic. Always consult the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for full classification and handling instructions.
Can the heptahydrate be used for organocerium chemistry?
It must first be dried carefully under vacuum and heat to the anhydrous form. Rapid heating can form oxychloride, which reduces reactivity.
Which purity do you supply?
Purities from 99.0% to 99.9% are available. Please state your requirement.
How can I get a price and documents?
Prices depend on quantity, packaging and destination. Contact us with your required volume to receive a quotation together with the CoA and SDS.
