Benzene Product Overview
Benzene (C6H6) is a clear, colorless, highly volatile and flammable liquid with a sweet odor. It boils at 80.1°C and has a density of about 0.88 g/cm³. It is obtained from catalytic reforming, steam cracking and coal tar.
Almost all benzene serves as a chemical feedstock. Alkylation with ethylene gives ethylbenzene for styrene; alkylation with propylene gives cumene, which yields phenol and Acetone. Hydrogenation produces cyclohexane for nylon, nitration produces nitrobenzene for aniline and polyurethane intermediates, and alkylation with long-chain olefins produces linear alkylbenzene for detergents.
It is a known human carcinogen. Its use as a solvent has largely been replaced by Toluene and other hydrocarbons, and in the EU its presence in consumer products is restricted. Related aromatics include o-Xylene and Fluorobenzene.
