Metronidazole Benzoate Product Overview
Metronidazole benzoate (C13H13N3O4) is a white or slightly yellowish crystalline powder that is practically insoluble in water. It melts at about 99–102°C. After oral intake, it is converted to active Metronidazole in the body.
The main reason for using the ester is taste: metronidazole itself is very bitter, while the benzoate is nearly tasteless and practically insoluble, which makes it ideal for pediatric oral suspensions. About 1.6 g of the benzoate corresponds to 1 g of metronidazole. Producers control the content of free metronidazole, which affects taste.
