Dimethyl Disulfide Product Overview
Dimethyl disulfide (CH3SSCH3) is a clear, pale yellow liquid with a strong, unpleasant garlic-like odor. It also contains about 68% sulfur by weight and boils at about 110°C.
Refineries use DMDS as the preferred sulfiding agent for cobalt-molybdenum and nickel-molybdenum hydrotreating catalysts, because its high sulfur content and controlled decomposition activate the catalyst efficiently. Similarly, petrochemical plants inject small amounts into ethylene steam crackers to reduce coke formation and carbon monoxide generation.
