Description
Bismuth(III) Oxide (Bi2O3, CAS 1304-76-3) is a yellow bismuth compound used in electronic ceramics, low-melting glasses, catalysts, pyrotechnics and dental materials. Zyntex is a wholesale supplier and distributor of high-purity Bismuth(III) oxide, with a CoA as well as an SDS for every lot.

Bismuth(III) Oxide Product Overview

Bismuth(III) oxide (Bi2O3) is a yellow, heavy powder that is insoluble in water but dissolves in acids. It melts at about 817°C and, unlike lead oxide, has low toxicity, which makes it a popular lead-free alternative.

In addition, electronic ceramic producers use it as a key additive in zinc oxide varistors, which protect circuits against voltage surges, often together with Zinc oxide. Glass and enamel producers also use it in low-melting, lead-free glasses, glazes and sealing glasses. It also serves as a raw material for other bismuth compounds, such as Bismuth subnitrate and Bismuth (III) oxychloride.

In addition, bismuth oxide finds use in catalysts, as a radiopaque filler in dental cements, and in pyrotechnics, where it creates the typical crackling effect. Its high-temperature delta phase is also one of the best oxide-ion conductors, so researchers study it for fuel cells and sensors.

Key Applications of Bismuth(III) Oxide

Typical uses include, for example:

⚡ Varistors

Additive in zinc oxide varistor ceramics.

🏺 Lead-Free Glass

Component of low-melting glasses as well as glazes.

🦷 Dental Materials

Radiopaque filler in dental cements.

🎆 Pyrotechnics

Crackling effect in fireworks.

Always consult the Safety Data Sheet (SDS), because it contains the full classification and handling instructions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is bismuth oxide used instead of lead oxide?

Because it has similar glass-forming properties but much lower toxicity, it serves as a lead-free alternative in glasses and glazes.

Which purities do you supply?

Purities from 99.9% for ceramics up to 99.999% for electronics as well as research are available.

How can I get a price and documents?

Prices depend on quantity, packaging and destination, so please contact us with your required volume. We then send a quotation together with the CoA and SDS.
