Dimethyl Formamide Product Overview
N,N-Dimethylformamide (C3H7NO) is a clear, colorless, hygroscopic liquid with a faint amine-like odor. It boils at about 153°C and mixes with water and most organic solvents. As a polar aprotic solvent, it dissolves many polymers, salts and reagents that are difficult to dissolve otherwise.
Major uses of DMF include polyurethane solutions for synthetic leather and coatings, wet spinning of acrylic and spandex fibers, and pharmaceutical and agrochemical synthesis. It is also a reagent in organic chemistry, for example in the Vilsmeier-Haack formylation, and is used in electronics and as a solvent for extraction processes.
DMF is classified as toxic for reproduction. In the EU, its use at concentrations of 0.3% and above is restricted under REACH Annex XVII unless exposure is kept below defined limits, which has increased interest in alternatives such as Dimethyl carbonate and Acetonitrile for some applications. Note that N-Ethyl-2-Pyrrolidone (NEP), another common polar aprotic solvent, carries the same reproductive toxicity classification.
