Chloral Hydrate Product Overview
Chloral hydrate (C2H3Cl3O2) forms colorless, transparent crystals with a pungent odor. It melts at about 52–56°C and is extremely soluble in water. It is one of the oldest synthetic sedatives, introduced in the 19th century.
Its medical use has declined strongly, but it remains in a few licensed pharmaceutical products in some countries. In laboratories, it is used in clearing and mounting media for microscopy of plant tissues and small organisms, such as Hoyer’s medium.
