Description
Molybdenum Disulfide (MoS2, CAS 1317-33-5) is a layered solid lubricant used in greases, dry film coatings and friction materials, and a catalyst material. Zyntex is a wholesale supplier and distributor of Molybdenum Disulfide powder, with a CoA and SDS for every lot.

Molybdenum Disulfide Product Overview

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) is a lead-gray powder with a metallic luster and a slippery feel. Its crystal consists of stacked layers that slide over each other with very little friction, similar to graphite. Unlike many lubricants, it keeps working under very high loads and in vacuum.

Lubricant producers add MoS2 to greases for heavily loaded parts such as constant-velocity joints, gears and bearings, and use it in dry film lubricants, anti-seize pastes and engine oil additives. Brake and clutch producers use it in friction materials. In air, it remains stable up to about 350°C; in inert atmospheres and vacuum it works at much higher temperatures.

Other applications include catalysts for hydrodesulfurization in refineries and research into two-dimensional semiconductors and battery materials. For other solid lubricants and molybdenum compounds, see Boron nitride, Molybdic acid and Molybdenum(VI) oxide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Up to what temperature does MoS2 lubricate?

In air it remains effective up to about 350°C, above which it slowly oxidizes. In vacuum or inert gas it works at considerably higher temperatures.

Which particle sizes are available?

Several grades from coarse to submicron powders are available. Finer grades suit dry films and oils, coarser grades suit greases and friction materials.

How can I get a price and documents?

Prices depend on quantity, packaging and destination. Contact us with your required volume to receive a quotation together with the CoA and SDS.
