Cholestyramine Product Overview
Cholestyramine is a strongly basic anion exchange resin made of a styrene–divinylbenzene copolymer carrying quaternary ammonium groups, usually in the chloride form. It is an off-white to white, hygroscopic powder that does not dissolve in water. Its quality is expressed mainly through its bile acid binding capacity.
Because the resin is not absorbed, it binds bile acids in the gut and is excreted with them. Pharmaceutical companies use it in powders and sachets for oral suspension, which are mixed with water or juice before use.
